Geneva, NY – Former President Bill Clinton and United States Senator Hillary Clinton (D-NY) will be the guests of Hobart and William Smith President Mark D. Gearan and his family in Geneva, N.Y., for the Labor Day weekend. The Clintons will arrive on Saturday, after a visit to the New York State Fair in Syracuse, and a public welcome ceremony will be held at 3 p.m. on the Hobart Quad. Students, faculty members, and the community will have an opportunity at that time to greet the Clintons.
President Gearan and the Clintons have been friends for more than a decade. Gearan was campaign manager for Al Gore's vice presidential bid in 1992 and later served on President Clinton's transition team and as the director of communications for the White House. The families have stayed in close contact over the years since Gearan left the White House, first to serve as director of the Peace Corps and, since 1999, as president of Hobart and William Smith.
This is the first time that former President Clinton has been on the Geneva campus. Senator Clinton has been here on two previous occasions: first in January, 2000, when she led a forum with students and community members on public service; and again in the spring of 2001, when, as Senator, she convened a group of upstate New York college presidents on the HWS campus to discuss the economic impact of higher educational institutions on the area.
President Gearan, his wife Mary Herlihy Gearan, and their children Madeleine and Kathleen, are looking forward to some quiet time with their friends.
