May 21, 1999 Geneva, NY — A performance reading of The Environmental Disaster Coffee Table Book by Robert Emmet Hernan, the assistant attorney general for the New York State Environmental Protection Bureau, will be held at noon on Monday, May 31, in Houghton House Art Gallery, Room 212, on the HWS campus. The presentation is free and the public is welcome.
The book adapts a folk tale, The Three Sillies, as a fictional narrative device to recreate the factual events arising out of such environmental disasters as those which occurred at Chernobyl, Prince William Sound, Seveso, and Love Canal. Hernan headed the litigation of the Love Canal toxic waste site in Niagara Falls. The book also includes original works of art which provide visual expression to the events and issues associated with these disasters. Slides of the artwork will be shown during the reading.
Hernan will be accompanied by Jeanne Silverthorne, one of the artists. Other artists who have works in the book include Nancy Davidson, Greg Drasler, Kathy Grove, Laurence Hegarty, Larry List, Elaine Reichek, Michael Smith, and Susan Unterberg. Music recorded by Philip Glass will also accompany the reading.
