Bartlett Theatre Presents the Rare French Tragedy

April 19, 2000 Geneva, NY – “Surena, General of Parthia,” by Pierre Corneille, will be presented by Hobart and William Smith Colleges at 7 p.m. on Thursday, April 27, through Saturday, April 29, in the Bartlett Theatre. “Surena” is a rarely performed, classic French tragedy that will offer theatergoers a rare opportunity to see this masterpiece of the 17th century French stage.

Surena is an elegant and passionate tragedy in which sophisticated games of love and ambition lead a beautiful princess, a celebrated general, and a kingdom to their ruin.

The spring production is directed by Robert F. Gross, director of theatre and professor of English. Gross holds a bachelor's degree from the University of Wisconsin at Madison, a master's degree from Ohio State University, and the Ph.D. from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He taught at Cornell University before coming to Hobart and William Smith Colleges in 1987. Gross has written several books including S. N. Behrman: a Research and Production Sourcebook (1992), and numerous articles on the theatre and theatre arts.

Bartlett Theatre is located in Coxe Hall off of Pulteney Street on the HWS campus. General admission is $5.
