Colleges will hold second Commencement for student-athletes.
May 9, 2002 Geneva, N.Y. – The good news is that several athletics teams from the Colleges were invited to post-season tournaments. The bad news is that some of those tournaments will be held this weekend, in direct conflict with the Hobart and William Smith Colleges Commencement ceremony. So that senior athletes will not completely miss the Commencement experience, the Colleges will hold a second Commencement ceremony at 10 a.m. on Monday, May 13, in the Chapel.
The tournament schedule has an impact on between nine and 12 students (depending on whether the William Smith lacrosse team wins their game against Rowan University on Saturday). Though a relatively small number of graduates are affected, Colleges officials felt it was important to offer the athletes and their families an opportunity to attend a Commencement “ceremony.”
While the student-athletes who “graduate” on Monday will miss the Commencement address by Mark Shields and the remarks from their student speakers, they will still “walk” to receive their diplomas, hear remarks from President Gearan, and get their photos taken in their robes.
A complete list of students who will be traveling for the weekend is below.
