Charter Day will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, April 12, at St. John's Chapel. The speaker will be Ludwig P. Gaines '88. He will speak on “Life is No Brief Candle: Lessons for Living and Leading the 'Good Life,'” which originates from a quote from George Bernard Shaw and reflects what Gaines believes has been and remains central to his success and continued motivation in life: public service and working in the public interest.
Charter Day is the formal ceremony of the founding of Hobart College. This year we celebrate the 181st year of existence. Undergraduates will be honored and new members to Orange Key, Chimera and the Druid Society will be introduced. The Hobartones will provide music.
Gaines is currently a law professor at the Howard University School of Law and a legal and policy consultant with Government & Business Solutions, Inc. (G&B Solutions), an information technology and management consultant company founded in Alexandria and based in McLean, Va. Gaines was elected second vice chair of the Alexandria United Way and vice president of the Alexandria NAACP. He is a member of the Chamber of Commerce’s Education Partnership, the board of trustees of the INOVA Alexandria Hospital Foundation, and the board of directors of the Friends of Freedmen’s Cemetery (FFC). Gaines received his bachelor's degree from Hobart College in 1988, and his J.D. degree in 1992 from Howard University.
