Gary Stewart will give “Newspapering in Russia 1992-2002: New Freedoms, Old Challenges” at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday, October 22, in Coxe 8. In 1992 and 1993, Stewart was managing editor of The Moscow Times, the first English-language daily in the history of the former Soviet Union. Recruited by a group of Amsterdam-based publishers, Stewart helped launch and develop the Times, in addition to assisting in its relocation from a Moscow hotel to offices in the Pravda publishing complex. The Times remains a vibrant force in Russian politics today.
Stewart is presently deputy director of community relations at Cornell University in Ithaca. Prior to assuming that position earlier this year, he was senior editor and opinion page editor of The Ithaca Journal. He graduated from Emerson College with a B.S. in mass communications in 1978 and lives in Ithaca with his wife and son.
