Bringewatt Quoted on Campus Insurance

Insuring the property of college students was the topic of the Sept. 22 New York Times story “You Bought a PC for His Dorm Room, but Did You Insure It?” According to the article, most homeowner's policies automatically cover the personal property of dependent college students up to 10 percent of what the parents have. Some experts caution that parents using their policy to protect their child can be dangerous to their insurance records. They also note that the deductible on homeowner's policies is often relatively high, say, $1,000, and that many student losses will fall below it. Paul Bringewatt, director of administrative services, was interviewed about the dorm fire last year, and said students are told they are responsible for their personal property, and he encourages them to have insurance.
