GENEVA, N.Y.—William Smith College Field Hockey Head Coach Sally Scattonrecently was chosen the Upstate Collegiate Athletic Association Coach of the Year by a vote of the league’s head coaches. Scatton, of Trumansburg, led the Herons to a 13-5 regular season record despite graduating 53 percent of the 2001 team’s scoring.
In her 15th season at William Smith, Scatton transformed a very young team into a consistent winner by midseason. Her 21-player roster featured eight first-years and five sophomores, so it was no surprise when the youthful Herons alternated wins and losses through the first month of the season. When William Smith finally won back-to-back games for the first time in 2002 (Sept. 28 at Vassar, 4-2; Oct. 1 vs. Rochester, 2-1 in 2ot), the success touched off a hot streak that saw the Herons win nine of their last 10 regular season games.
Scatton’s Herons had won seven in a row entering the UCAA championship game against then-sixth ranked Skidmore. The Thoroughbreds stole a 3-2 win from William Smith, overcoming a 2-1 halftime deficit.
A 2002 ECAC Quarterfinalist, Scatton has led the Herons to the postseason in each of her 15 seasons, including three NCAA Division III National Championships (1992, ’97, 2000). She boasts a career record of 2456-66-3 (.786) at William Smith.
