Join in this traditional service of readings and song celebrating the season of Advent and the coming of Christmas.
December 4, 2002 GENEVA, N.Y.—The community is invited to the third annual Festival of Advent Lessons and Carols at 7 p.m. on Sunday, Dec. 15, at St. John's Chapel on the Hobart and William Smith Colleges campus.
The candle light service will feature Colleges organist Mary Ann Hamilton and the women's a cappella group, Three Miles Lost, as well as the Colleges Chorale and Mixed Ensemble, directed by Robert Cowles, associate professor of music. The congregation is invited to join in singing several Advent hymns. Readers of the nine lessons will include President Mark Gearan, Deans Debra DeMeis and Clarence Butler, as well as students from both colleges. A reception will follow at the Chaplain's Residence next door, 630 S. Main St.
This traditional service of nine lessons and carols originated in England and was made famous at Kings College, Cambridge. The liturgy alternates biblical readings from the Hebrew and Christian scriptures with choral and congregational Advent carols. This event is free and open to the public.
