The Geneva High School Drama Club, under the direction of Pat Collins, professor of education, will present a new musical comedy, “HONK!,” at 7:30 p.m. on Friday and Saturday, March 21 and 22, at Geneva High School. Tickets for “HONK!” are $6 for adults, $5 for senior citizens and $4 for students, and are available at The College Store, Martin Music, Geneva High School, or by calling 781-4179. The Finger Lakes Times showed the cast in the March 20 issue.
“HONK!” is a zany, contemporary retelling of The Ugly Duckling that promises to be fun for the whole family. According to Collins, HONK!, which opened at the Royal National Theatre in London in 1999, is a play about difference and identity. The play brings all the traditional elements of a Broadway musical to this humorous look at how often the value of individual differences is overlooked. The audience will be entertained by large rollicking dance numbers, haunting ballads, epic journeys, and spectacular scenery as more than 50 students tell the story of Ugly, whose odd and awkward appearance prompts all the other barnyard animals to ridicule him. He leaves the safety of the barnyard with a fiendish and hungry cat who spends the evening trying to have him for dinner.
Throughout his musical journey beyond the farm Ugly encounters dancing frogs, geese, more cats, swans, and even some humans before discovering who he really is, which brings him back home again.
In addition to direction by Collins, “HONK!” features lighting design by Ralph Dressler, technical director of the Bartlett Theatre, instrumental direction by Christine Sauter, accompanist in the dance department, and scenic design by Cherry Rahn.
