President Mark Gearan was quoted in the Oct. 2 Florida Times-Union story “Most not eager to seek seat on MSD”, saying while there may be some towns where public service is lagging, community service as a whole is on the rise. “I think there has been a resurgence in public service and volunteerism, particularly in American colleges,” Gearan said. “It's different than in the '60s. Students used to want to change the world; now it's making a difference in my area. I think it's a pragmatic type of activism, volunteerism.” The story focused on seats on the Florida Municipal Service District board. Sometimes seats remain vacant for months at a time because of controversial issues, while other times candidates for the seats run unopposed and see the job as a call to public service.
