A Commencement of Their Own

Hobart and William Smith Colleges will hold second Commencement for student-athletes

May 9, 2003 GENEVA, N.Y. – In an effort to allow the graduating student-athletes who will be competing out-of-state in championship competitions on Sunday a chance to experience a bit of the pomp and circumstance of graduation, Hobart and William Smith Colleges will hold a mini Commencement ceremony at 11 a.m. on Monday, May 12, in St. John’s Chapel. The nine students who will participate in the ceremony are members of the Hobart and William Smith crew teams and the William Smith lacrosse team.

This is the second year in a row that Colleges’ President Mark D. Gearan will don his academic regalia and join the student-athletes in their caps and gowns to lead a second commencement celebration on the morning after Commencement. Gearan initiated the practice last year so that senior student-athletes did not completely miss the Commencement experience.

While the student-athletes who graduate on Monday will miss the Commencement address by NBC news correspondent Andrea Mitchell and the remarks from their student speakers, they will still walk to receive their diplomas, hear remarks from President Gearan, and get their photos taken in their robes.

This weekend, William Smith lacrosse will be in Salisbury, Md., playing St. Mary’s College on Saturday in the NCAA Division III lacrosse tournament. If the Herons win, they will advance to Sunday’s quarterfinal round and then (hopefully) to the National Championship rounds on May 17 and 18 at St. John Fisher. The graduating seniors from William Smith lacrosse include Emily Durki from Canton, N.Y.; Shana Hawrylchak from Altamont, N.Y.; Brigid Lynch from Manhasset, N.Y.; Megan Shea from Doylestown, Pa.; Jaclyn Toner from Geneva, N.Y.; and Amanda Wynn from Aspen. Colo.

Both the Hobart crew and the William Smith crew teams will be in Mercer, N.J. competing in the ECAC championships. For William Smith the competition is a chance to qualify for the NCAA championships; Hobart would go on to the IRA championships. The graduating crew members include Heather Hawkins from Eagan, Minn.; Kevin Stevenson from Burlington, Vt.; and Dave Undercoffler from Canandaigua, N.Y.
