Possible Virus Alert: The Blaster Worm

DOIT has received warnings from Symantec, TrendMicro, SANS, and incidents.org of a possible worm being distributed via e-mail, instant chat programs, and IRC Chat under the filename MSBLAST.EXE, MSBLASTER.EXE, BLASTER.EXE or similar.

Users who receive any files via e-mail, chat or otherwise with a filename similar to the above, do NOT run it, delete it immediately (be careful not to double click it).

While the Colleges are protected from the Internet spread, DOIT highly encourages all users to make sure their home Windows computers are updated with the latest patches. Also, make sure home computers have antivirus software with updated signatures.

Reminder that any users VPN(ing) into campus are required to have anti-virus software that updates at least once a week.

Please update home computers, and do not bring them into campus and connect them to the HWS network unless they are patched, secured, and running updated anti-virus software.
