Lecture on SARS, China and Globalization at the Colleges

The first of the extended series of “Stern Hall Coffee Hour Lectures.”

(October 2, 2003) GENEVA, N.Y.- At 4:45 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 16, the Hobart and William Smith Colleges departments of Asian Languages and Cultures, Anthropology and Sociology and the Office of Provost are pleased to invite the campus community and the public to the first of what is intended to be an extended series of “Stern Hall Coffee Hour Lectures.” James L. Watson, a professor of Chinese society anthropology at Harvard University will present “SARS in China: Consequences of Globalization.” Admission is free. Refreshments will be served in the first-floor foyer of Stern Hall, prior to the lecture.

Watson is the John and Wilma Fairbank Professor of Chinese Society and a professor of Anthropology at Harvard University. He is also the current president of the Association of Asian Studies, the largest body of international scholars specializing on Asia. He is a fieldworking anthropologist who specializes in Chinese rural society, and his research has focused on Chinese emigration, agricultural development, family life and village organization, food systems and the emergence of a post-socialist culture in the Peoples Republic of China. Since the mid-1990s Watson has worked with graduate students to investigate the impact of transnational food industries in East Asia, Russia and Europe. He also teaches courses on Chinese society, globalization and comparative food systems.

Prior to teaching at Harvard, Professor Watson taught at the University of London, the University of Pittsburgh and the University of Hawaii. His publications include “Emigration and the Chinese Lineage,” “Between Two Cultures: Migrants and Minorities in Britain,” “Class and Social Stratification in Post-Revolution China,” “Kinship Organization in Late Imperial China” and “Death Ritual in Chinese Society.”
