For the first time in its history, a William Smith student has been awarded a Rhodes Scholarship. Julia James, a senior majoring in chemistry, has been selected as one of 32 students in the nation to continue her studies at Oxford University in England. James was featured Dec. 15 in the Chemical and Engineering News, Washington, D.C. story “Success Stories: ACS Scholars Include 2004 Rhodes Recipient .” James is an American Chemical Society Scholar. At Oxford, James will pursue a Ph.D. in HIV immunology, hoping someday to be an AIDS researcher.
Hilda Castillo ’05, who researches quantum mechanical behavior and the role of tautomerization in enediyne warhead drugs, was also named an ACS Scholar this year.
