When New York City Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg opened his Jan. 8 State of the City address, he recognized City officials, and distinguished guests, including Julia James '04.
“Now we have one other very special guest,” said Bloomberg. “She is a graduate of James Madison High School in Brooklyn and she will soon be on her way to Oxford as a Rhodes Scholar, Miss Julia James. … Congratulations!” Bloomberg added, “Anybody that thinks our school system can’t turn out great students, just call her and she’ll tell you.”
The crowd at Silvercup Studios East, Queens, gave James a standing ovation. James has been selected as one of 32 students in the nation to continue her studies at Oxford University in England, where she will pursue a Ph.D. in HIV immunology, hoping someday to be an AIDS researcher.
