HWS Athletic Trainers to be Honored

The Canandaigua Chamber of Commerce will honor Hobart and William Smith Colleges Associate Athletic Trainer Stephanie Sibeto and student trainers, senior Matt Yarger and first-year Andrew Martland at the 41st Annual Safety Council Awards dinner for their use of an automated external defibrillator in November 2003.

Their heroic life saving efforts came shortly after the Hobart soccer team defeated Fredonia. Martland was wrapping things up in Bristol Gym when he saw an elderly man collapse from a heart attack. Seeing that the man, 90-year-old Ralph Parker, was in trouble, he ran for help and found Sibeto and Yarger coming in from the game.

Sibeto called 911, while Yarger got the defibrillator from the training room and together they worked to revive Parker, who had come to watch his grandson play for Fredonia that afternoon.

Sibeto, Yarger, and Martland will be presented with the Life Saving Award at a dinner and awards ceremony on March 30, at 7 p.m., at the Lakeshore House in Canandaigua.
