The Hobart crew produced a stunning upset of the University of Michigan on Saturday, March 27. The Statesmen varsity eight defeated the Wolverines, who were ranked 13th in the country in the latest US Rowing Association poll, by 7.6 seconds and topped the host Ithaca Bombers by 11.2 seconds.
Hobart's freshmen eight also defeated Michigan's first freshman eight by 7.9 seconds and Ithaca by 26.4 seconds.
“Our outstanding performance this early in the season is an important first step in attaining our goal of top finishes at this year's New York State and ECAC postseason championships,” Head Coach Mike Guerrieri said.
Hobart's freshman four was also victorious by 14 seconds over Michigan's entry.
Hobart’s varsity eight was led by senior stroke Havilland Campbell, junior Michael Hoepp, first-years Sep Levatich and Michael Grenier, and sophomores Dan Gilbert, Gardner Loring, JM Chadonic, Timothy Faxon, and Gavin Johnstone-Butcher.
Hobart returns to action on April 3, back in Ithaca for a follow-up duel race with the Bombers.
