The cost of college education was featured in the June 30 Democrat and Chronicle article “Area families cope with college tuition”. According to the article, the average tuition among the Rochester area's private colleges will be $22,333 this fall — though among individual schools it will range from $17,000 to $30,000. At the local private colleges, tuition is going up from 5 percent to more than 6 percent over last year.
Cutting costs has to be “balanced with the trust the parents have given us to provide a 21st-century education that has all of the kinds of elements we think a liberal arts education requires,” said Gearan, pointing to the student-teacher ratio (11:1), the athletics program, and the emphasis on study abroad. “All of that goes into a) the cost, and b) the experience.”
