Donna Albro, Anita Canizares, Marie-France Etienne, Jack Harris, David Mapstone, and Jo Beth Mertens represented Hobart and William Smith Colleges at the Association of American Colleges and Universities' (AAC&U) fourth annual Greater Expectations Institute: Campus Leadership for Student Engagement, Inclusion, and Achievement in Snowbird, Utah. The team was invited to attend through a competitive application process and was joined by teams from schools such as Stanford, Wheaton, Harvey Mudd, Stonybrook, and Occidental. Each team worked on its own project in conversation with others. The HWS team worked on finding ways to solidify relations between various units of the Colleges to promote diversity, inclusiveness, and civic engagement locally and internationally.
The Greater Expectations initiative seeks a “dramatic reorganization of undergraduate education to ensure that all students receive an education of lasting value, relevant for the 21st century.” Greater Expectations emphasizes inclusiveness and student learning that is intentional, self-reflective, and experiential. As such, it is a good match for the liberal arts experience at HWS.
