Blanchard Invited to Speak at University of Michigan Symposium

Lara Blanchard, assistant professor of art history, was one of six invited speakers to participate in a symposium held at the University of Michigan Museum of Art on Saturday, Nov. 9. The symposium, “New Research on Chinese Painting,” was convened in conjunction with an exhibition of the art collection of Professor James Cahill, a leading historian of Chinese art, and his family. Her paper, titled “Reconfiguring Integrity: The Scholar's Image in Chinese Painting, Song to Ming,” focused upon a sixteenth-century handscroll, “Su Dongpo Returning to the Hanlin Academy.” This painting represents an important departure from earlier images of eminent Chinese scholars and demonstrates how the visual tropes that connote integrity change over time. Blanchard has been with the Colleges since 2001.
