Sandra E. Bissell, who was recently named director of the Office of Human Resources, begins her duties at the Colleges today, Feb. 7.
Bissell comes from Washington, D.C., where she has worked at The John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts for the past 17 years, serving as vice president of human resources since 2002. While at the Kennedy Center, she has focused on employee and labor relations, working with administrative personnel, the board of trustees, musicians, artists and stagehands. Bissell was instrumental in the creation of the Kennedy Center's first human resources department, and managed the implementation of its first human resources information system.
“Sandra's wealth of knowledge in the human resources arena and her considerable experience with various constituencies make her an excellent fit for this position,” says HWS President Mark D. Gearan. “She is a welcome addition to the Hobart and William Smith family.”
Bissell holds a bachelor's degree in public management from the University of Maine at Orono and has attended the Center for Creative Leadership in Colorado Springs, Colo. She has served as a management trustee for the welfare and annuity boards of International Association of Stage and Technical Employees Local 22, as well as the American Federation of Musicians Local 161-710 health trust fund. She is a member of the Society of Human Resources and the International Foundation of Employee Benefits.
Before joining the Kennedy Center, Bissell served as payroll supervisor for the International Health Specialist program in Brookline, Mass. At HWS, she replaces Stephen Nathan of Fayetteville, who retired earlier this year after serving as director of human resources at the Colleges for nearly a decade.
