Welcoming Spring with Song

Hobart and William Smith Colleges announces upcoming music performances

(Feb. 22, 2005) GENEVA, N.Y. – Let the sounds of spring fill your ears and wipe away another winter. The Department of Music at Hobart and William Smith Colleges is sponsoring nine concerts in the upcoming Spring Concert series for Hobart and William Smith Colleges and the Geneva community. Four of the concerts will be performed by HWS students while the remainder will be highlighted by professional performers.

The list of performances is as follows. Further details of each performance will be announced prior to each event. Unless otherwise noted events are free and open to the public.

• A concert of music by Composer-in-Residence Ruth Watson Henderson will be performed by HWS faculty and students at 8 p.m. on Thursday, March 3, in St. John’s Chapel.

• The Syracuse Vocal Ensemble Concert: “Cherry Blossoms – Songs from the Japanese” will be performed at 3 p.m. on Sunday, March 6, in the Geneva Room. Tickets are $12 – general, $10 – seniors and non-HWS students, $5 – HWS students.

• The New England Winds Concert, the woodwind quintet from the United States Air Force Band of Liberty, will perform at 8 p.m. on Tuesday, March 8, in the Geneva Room.

• Classical Northern Indian music lectures-demonstrations featuring Uday Bhawalkar and Manik Munde will perform at 8 p.m. on Tuesday, March 29, in Stern Hall room 103 and on Thursday, March 31, in the Geneva Room.

• The Hobart and William Smith Colleges Chorale spring tour concerts directed by Professor Robert Cowles will be held at 8 p.m. on Wednesday, April 20, and Saturday, April 23, in St. John’s Chapel.

• The Colleges Brass Ensemble spring concert directed by Jim Trowbridge will be held at 8 p.m. on Friday, April 22, in St. John’s Chapel.

• The Hobart and William Smith Colleges Jazz Ensemble spring concert directed by Bob Barbuto will be held at 8 p.m. on Sunday, April 24, in the Geneva Room.

• The Colleges String and Eoodwind Ensembles, directed by Andy Zaplatynsky and John Oberbrunner, perform at 8 p.m. on Tuesday, May 3, in St. John’s Chapel.
