Phil Bredesen was elected Democratic governor of Tennessee and will be inaugurated Jan. 18 as the state's 48th chief executive. Bredesen will succeed Don Sundquist, a Republican, who did not run again. Bredesen defeated four-term Republican Congressman Van Hilleary of Spring City; both campaigned against Sundquist's proposal to introduce a state income tax. His father, Phil Bredesen Sr., was born in Seneca Castle and graduated from Hobart College in 1941. Bredesen Jr. was featured in the Geneva Finger Lakes Times story “Local grad elected Tenn. Governor” from Nov. 18.
