President Mark D. Gearan was featured in a Finger Lakes Times article about The Sharing the Light Awards given by Catholic Charities of the Finger Lakes to four recipients this year, Gearan among them.
Tim Buckley a Geneva attorney who serves on the Catholic Chartities' board and helped organize the event is quoted in the article as saying, “We should honor people who have done good works in the community, who have shared their talents and their time and have given an example by their deeds.”
Gearan was director of the Peace Corps before becoming president of the Colleges and actively encourages civic engagement among the HWS community and students in particular. In the article, he praises students and others.
“In many ways, I'm just the standard-bearer for many behind me who share in this award,” he said. “We like to think that we prepare students here to lead and serve in the 21st century, and it starts right here in Geneva.”
Gearan and the other recipients will receive their awards at a dinner on June 7. The dinner is open to the public and tickets may be purchased through Catholic Charities.
