William F. McGowan elected to serve
GENEVA, N.Y.—Geneva Scholarship Associates (GSA) has elected William F. McGowan to serve as the organization’s new board president. McGowan, a graduate of Syracuse University and University of Michigan Law School, has been practicing law in Geneva for 40 years.
An active member of the Geneva community, McGowan has been a member and former president of the Kiwanis, a member of Rotary Club and its board of directors and a three-term board member of the Salvation Army. For 10 years, McGowan was a board member of Ontario County Board of Supervisors, serving three of those years as acting Chairman of the Board; he has also served on the board of the Geneva Area Chamber of Commerce and is a founding member of Seneca Lake Pure Waterways Association. Professionally, McGowan is a member of the Ontario County and New York State Bar associations.
GSA is a 37-year-old partnership between the Geneva community and the Colleges that helps financially deserving Geneva High School or DeSales High School students attend Hobart and William Smith Colleges. To date, more than 100 local youths have received assistance from GSA. As a father of five and grandfather to eight, McGowan has had a long-standing interest in local town/gown relations, becoming a part of GSA seemed a natural fit.
“GSA provides an opportunity for local kids to attend Hobart and William Smith through the support of their community. Not only did I want to be part of that opportunity, I want to see it grow,” said McGowan. “Following in the footsteps of my predecessor, Rob Anania Jr., is not an easy task. I am looking forward to continuing Rob’s successful efforts.”
GSA will celebrate its 37th year at a reception at the home of HWS President Mark D. Gearan at 5 p.m. on Monday, June 6. The announcement of the new GSA recipients for the 2005-06 academic year will be made at this reception.
