Cowles to appear as ‘Sweeney Todd’

Profesor of Music Robert Cowles, chair of the Department of Music, will play the title role in the Geneva Theatre Guild's summer production of Stephen Sondheim's “Sweeney Todd.”

“Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street,” premiered in 1979 and received eight Tony Awards. The Broadway cast included George Hearn in the title role and Angela Lansbury. The story is taken from an English folk tale of a barber who returns to his London shop after 15 years' exile in Australia, and begins to murder those who wrong him.

Cowles has been at HWS since 1992, and has directed the choral ensembles and taught music theory and conducting. During 2001-02, he was a Fulbright Scholar in Estonia, where he taught choral music and conducted the Estonian Academy of Music. He holds a doctorate from Indiana University School of Music in Bloomington, a master of music from the New England Conservatory in Boston, and a bachelor's from Macalester College in St. Paul, Minn.

The musical will be presented at 8 p.m. July 15 and 16 and at 2 p.m. July 17 at the Smith Opera House on Seneca Street.

Tickets are $10 and $12 and may be reserved by e-mail, or by calling the theatre box office at 781-LIVE.
