Sandra Chu, Head Coach of the William Smith Crew Team, has been selected to serve on a panel of reviwers in Elle Magazine's prestigious 2006 Lettres Prize. Chu will read, review and judge Joyce Carol Oates' “Missing Mom,” Louise Erdrich's “The Painted Drum,” and Joanna Briscoe's “Sleep With Me.” All three books are in pre-publication stages. A winner of best book will be chosen by Chu and other jurors and results published in the month of November. In addition, Chu will also jury the annual winner.
The Elle Lettres Grand Prix has been awarded to a book of fiction and a book of non-fiction since 2000. Chu served on the first panel of jurors. In total, 36 books selected by the magazine compete for the annual honor in the categories of fiction or non-fiction. Chu has been selected to the panel of fiction judges in 2000, 2002, 2004 and 2006, the maximum number of panels she has been allowed to serve. She is a published poet, has consulted with PBS on their Language of Life poetry curriculum, and is a graduate from Princeton University. Chu also holds an MA from New York University in English.
