Marian Costello Witmer, a former trustee of Hobart and William Smith Colleges, died Aug. 17 at Valley Manor in Rochester. She was 94.
A Phi Beta Kappa graduate of William Smith College, Class of 1932, she taught English in Webster for many years.
Kathy Regan '82, director of Alumnae Relations, recalled: “I had the honor of sitting with Marian at a WS Rochester Chapter event just before I started working here in alumnae relations.
“She was a remarkable and much-loved alumna and was a very involved volunteer on behalf of the Colleges. In many ways she was the matriarch of the WS Rochester Chapter. She was smart and elegant and gracious. She served on the Colleges Board of Trustees from 1954 to 1964 and received an honorary degree from HWS in 1979.
“The Alumnae Association honored her in 1988 with the Elizabeth Herendeen Odell award — their highest honor in recognizing service to our alma mater.”
