Colleges match AmeriCorps’ education award

During her recent visit to campus, AmeriCorps director Rosie K. Mauk announced that Hobart and William Smith Colleges had become a matching partner of the AmeriCorps Education Award.

“This relationship is appropriate, as our Colleges place significant value on fostering social responsibility and public service, and we are excited to match up to $1,000 per year for each eligible student,” said President Mark D. Gearan.

HWS offers student service opportunities including a Habitat for Humanity chapter, Alternative Spring Break, the America Reads and Jumpstart programs in local schools; Geneva Heroes, in which HWS students perform leadership training with eighth graders in Geneva; Students Organized for Service; participation in Celebrate Service … Celebrate Geneva, and more.

“This relationship as a matching partner will provide us with the opportunity to reward students for their commitment to community service which we value as a part of our mission,” Gearan added.

He is a member of the board of the Corporation for National and Community Service, which operates ServiceCorps, AmeriCorps, and The Partnership of Public Service.

Several current students at Hobart and William Smith Colleges have successfully completed a term of service in AmeriCorps and are already eligible for the award.
