The Carver-DeLaney Soccer and Basketball Team Rooms were dedicated in ceremonies beginning on the afternoon of Saturday, Oct. 29.
Dedication festivities in Bristol Gymnasium started with a welcome by Mark Gearan, HWS President; followed by an appreciation by Deb Steward, WS Director of Athletics; and an introduction of student-athletes by Aliceann Wilber, WS Head Soccer Coach.
Five senior Herons presented appreciation gifts to HWS Trustee Chip Carver ’81, and his wife, Anne DeLaney, whose lead gift helped renovate and furnish these rooms: Seraphine Hamilton, Ashley Kent, Tanya Richvalsky, Kate Warner and Pria Young. Several parents also contributed to the project.
The dedication was in honor of Susan Bassett, WS Director of Athletics from 1995 to 2005; and Aliceann Wilber, head coach of William Smith Soccer, whose undefeated '05 team recently recorded her 340th win. Last season, the Herons earned a 18th consecutive post-season appearance.
In her remarks, Wilber reminded the group that “only a part of an athlete’s athletic experience takes place on the field or courts. I cannot imagine a better facility for our Heron women to congregate, contemplate, commiserate and celebrate all the nuances that comprise a William Smith competitive experience.
“And for us, the coaches, we are so fortunate to have this magnificent facility where we can work at team building, plotting, planning and scheming -— in fact some of the things that I love best about coaching.”
A reception followed in the Heron Hall of Honor at nearby Winn-Seeley Gymnasium. The Herons-Ithaca College Bombers soccer game that was to precede the ceremonies had to be postponed.
