Ruth’s art picked for chocolate bar project

Associate Professor Nicholas H. Ruth of the HWS art department was recently chosen to have work included in the Art Bar project of Ithaca Fine Chocolates.

The candy bars were sold with a reproduction of an artist's work included on the inside, “sort of like a baseball card gone upscale,” Ruth said.

This year, 19 adult contemorary artists were picked to participate, as well as five children including two from the United States. A panel of art experts selected Ruth's painting, Untitled, from a group of about 80 submissions. The original oil on panel is 36 by 27 inches.

Ithaca Fine Chocolates is the nation's first chocolate company to be Fair Trade Certified and is 100-percent organic; part of the proceeds from sales of the bars went to benefit The Community School for Music and Arts in Ithaca, the International Child Art Foundation in Washington, D.C., and other groups.

Ruth, who joined the HWS faculty in 1995, holds a bachelor's degree in studio art from Pomona College in Claremont, Calif., and a master of fine art in painting from the Meadows School of the Arts at Southern Methodist University in Dallas. He is the recipient of an HWS Award for Excellence in Teaching.
