Bassett to lead NCAA Division III Management Council

William Smith College Director of Athletics Susan Bassett has been chosen to lead the NCAA Division III Management Council. A member of the Management Council since 1999, she has spent the past year as the vice chair and will assume the chair following the annual NCAA Convention, which began Jan. 9, in Anaheim, Calif.

The Management Council implements policies adopted by the Association’s Executive Committee and the Division III Presidents Council and manages the Division III governance structure. Council members are elected by the Division III membership at the convention.

As the chair of the Division III Management Council, Bassett will spend the next year working on a wide-range of topics as a member of several committees and subcommittees. Among policy changes under review by the council this year are the implementation of a financial aid audit procedure that is practical, thorough, and affordable; and examining the possible subdivision of Division III based on the differing philosophies of member institutions.

“Division III is at a crossroads,” Bassett said. “The decisions we make in the next year will affect the lives of student-athletes for years to come. I’m looking forward to working with the other members of the Council as we consider the important issues before us.”

The Director of Athletics at William Smith since 1995, Bassett holds a bachelor’s degree in physical education from Ithaca College and a master’s degree in physical education from Indiana University. She served as assistant director of athletics, aquatics director, and head men and women’s swimming coach at Union College from 1987 through 1995. Bassett was the head coach of swimming at William Smith from 1980 through 1987.
