Chris Button, project manager, was quoted in the Sunday, Jan. 12, Geneva Finger Lakes Times story “Adopting uniform codes: State has new building, fire safety rules”. The article addressed new state building and fire codes. The new academic building, Stern Hall, was designed under the new codes even before they were approved, as Colleges officials were granted a special administrative variance. Stern Hall is the first building to be built in Geneva under the new codes.
Button agreed that the new codes are both more restrictive and freer than the old ones. By including sprinklers in the design, the Colleges were able to build a three-story brick-clad building with a metal stud frame, when the old codes would have required masonry construction for a three-story building. Even though his testing budget doubled to meet the new requirements, Button said the Colleges saved a large amount of money on fireproofing and steel.
