The annual Charity Ball, a formal, black-tie event and benefit sponsored by Sankofa in conjunction with the Afro-Latino Alumni Association, from 6 to 11 p.m. on Saturday, April 1 at the Ramada Inn Geneva Lakefront.
Shavonne Ward '09 of the Bronx will be the guest speaker. This year's theme is “Let our seeds grow and they will dare to Dream.”
At the event, Sankofa will be honoring and awarding three outstanding members of the HWS community and the Geneva community at large. Chevanne DeVaney, who serves as the assistant director for intercultural affairs and as advisor to international students, is receiving the Excellence Award for her outstanding committment to the HWS community.
Lindsay Brown, who is a graduate student here at the Colleges, founded the America Counts program in Geneva, which helps students polish their mathematical skills. She is being awarded the Excellence Award for her outstanding student leadership in the Geneva community.
Lastly, Laurie Fuchs, a representative of the Boys and Girls Club of Geneva, is proactive in the advancement of Geneva's children. She will be honored the Excellence Award for her outstanding dedication toward Geneva's youth.
Tickets are $20 each for students and $25 for faculty and non-students. They are available in the Scandling Center at meal times, in the College Store or from members of the Sankofa board.
Shuttle transportation will be provided from Medbery parking lot across from the Scandling Center to the Ramada from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. and back to campus again between 10:30 and 11:15 p.m.
Profits from the evening will be donated to two Geneva children’s art programs.
