The 2006 Charter Day celebration, marking Hobart College's 184th year of existence, will begin at 10:45 a.m. Saturday, April 22, at St. John's Chapel.
Tradition dictates that on Charter Day, the deans and the Alumni Council honor undergraduates and welcome new members of the Orange Key, Chimera and Druid societies.
This year's guest speaker will be Dr. Clarence E. Butler, Dean of Hobart College, who is retiring at the end of the school year. He has been at the Colleges since 1979. He will be introduced by D. Vincent Cassano '91, an actuary for EBS Benefit Solutions.
In addition to the keynote speaker, each year a senior is nominated by his classmates to expound on his time at Hobart, and what that experience has meant to him.
A prelude to Charter Day festivities, the Benjamin Hale Dinner honors outstanding academic achievement at Hobart College. Departmental awards are given at this event. The dinner will begin at 6:15 p.m. on Friday, April 21, in the Common Room of Scandling. All Hobart men are invited.
Students and faculty who wish to attend Charter Day events should call the Hobart Deans Office at ext. 3300.
Alumni should call Mary Lou Chilbert at ext. 3700.
