Several HWS students are working to increase local awareness about the genocide taking place in the Darfur region of Sudan, in north-central Africa.
The group will be holding a Darfur Awareness Day on Saturday, April 29, and selling ribbons with the proceeds going to charities in Darfur. The community is encouraged to support the cause by wearing green.
Ariel Stern '06, who will be joining the group trip to Washington, D.C., for a national rally, comments: “instead of mourning a genocide, what if we could STOP one?”
Interested students are urged to join Darfur awareness supporters at a rally starting at 7 p.m. Thursday, April 27 at Temple B’rith Kodesh, 2131 Elmwood Ave., Rochester, featuring Darfur survivor Mohamed Yahya.
Vans will leave the Medbery parking lot at 5:30 p.m. to take people to the rally; those planning to attend should contact www.hillel.org.
The Religious Studies Department has reserved two HWS vans to take students to the rally at 1:30 p.m. Sunday, April 30 on The National Mall in Washington, D.C. Those interested in attending should e-mail email@example.com.
