Networking on Capitol Hill

Day on the Hill, a trip for HWS political science majors who want to learn more about the world of politics, is scheduled for Thursday, Jan. 11, in Washington, D.C.

Interested students should complete the application available through the Salisbury Center for Career Services and return it to the first floor of Trinity Hall as soon as possible.

Professor Iva Deutchman, chair of the political science faculty, will oversee the group that will hear from alums working in a wide range of capacities.

Trustee Gail McGinn ’73, the highest ranking civilian woman in the Department of Defense, is the first speaker scheduled to meet with the group. McGinn was appointed Deputy Under Secretary of Defense for Plans in November 2002. In this capacity, she serves as the official within the Office of the Under Secretary for Personnel and Readiness responsible for developing integrated evaluation processes to measure the success of personnel programs.

Her talk will be followed by Amanda Kreusch ’00, a contract specialist with NASA; Jessica Evangelista ’05, who works with the Democratic National Committee; Chip Arvantides ’88 of NASD; and Katie Hanna, a special agent with the FBI and daughter of Hobart Athletics Director Mike Hanna ’68.

In the afternoon, a panel of alums will include Patrick Rothwell ’01, a Republican lobbyist from Van Scoyoc Associates; Hadley Sosnoff ’06, a staff assistant with Rep. Nita Lowey (D-NY); Will Cox ’06, a staff assistant with Rep. Rob Simmons (R-CT); Peton Craighill ’94, project director with the Pew Research Center; and Melissa Roberts ’02, web design team leader with Free Range Studios.

A lunch and an evening networking reception will be attended by more alumni, alumnae and parents who work on Capitol Hill.

The event is sponsored by the Salisbury Center for Career Services and the Political Science Department. A $15 charge will be due in advance.
