Giving Back to the Community

Rachel Sumner ’08, co-organizer of this year’s Day of Service, is hoping Saturday will bring “good weather, positive service experiences, and an all around great day that inspires both students and members of the Geneva community to give back to the community and care for those around them.”

The annual “Celebrate Service … Celebrate Geneva” Day of Service will begin at 9 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 14, starting on the HWS Quad, then at work sites all across Geneva and the area.

Sumner says there is a wide range of jobs and sites available. They include painting at the American Red Cross office, cleaning windows at Lochland School, playing cards with residents of Seneca Lake Terrace and organizing costumes for Geneva Theatre Guild.

Other sites in the Geneva area include the Geneva Family YMCA, the Sons of Italy, Washington Street Cemetery, The Salvation Army, Trinity Church, First United Methodist Church and Rose Hill Mansion. Volunteers will also travel to Granger Homestead in Canandaigua.

Sumner encourages students and other members of the community to sign up for the day. Registration continues through Wednesday, Oct. 11 at tables in the Scandling Center and at DOS registration.

“Service is such a vital part of this school that it’s awesome to get so many people involved, even if it is only for one day. I’ve known several people who’ve formed lasting connections with organizations that they first made contact with through Day of Service,” Sumner says.
