HWS to host two NCAA championship events

Two HWS athletic teams are aiming for NCAA titles this year. William Smith College will host Eastern University in the first round of the 2006 NCAA Division III Field Hockey Tournament. The Herons and the Eagles will square off on McCooey Field at 4 p.m. on Nov. 8. In addition, the Hobart College soccer team will host Elizabethtown College in the first round of the NCAA Tournament on Nov. 8. The game is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m., and will take place on Cozzens Field.

William Smith (16-3) earned an automatic bid for the third consecutive season by winning the Liberty League Tournament Championship. The top-seeded Herons knocked off Rensselaer, 4-1, in the semifinals and St. Lawrence, 2-1, in the championship. Fans can acquire tickets for the event: $5 for adults and $3 for students.

On the soccer field, the Statesmen enter the NCAA Tournament with an overall record of 12-3-2, after finishing second in Liberty League regular season as the only unbeaten team in league play (5-0-2). This is Hobart’s second NCAA Tournament appearance, the first being in 1992 when the Statesmen posted a 15-0-0 regular season record, and entered the tournament as the top team in the nation.

Ticket prices will be $6 for general admission, $3 for senior citizens and students with an ID from the participating institutions, and $2 for children ages 3-12. Children under two will be admitted free of charge.
