Major League Lacrosse's Los Angeles Riptide recently introduced Hobart Hall of Famer Shawn Trell '89 (HOF '03) as an assistant coach for the 2007 season. The three-time All-American goalie will work primarily with the Riptide's defense.
“We are excited to have Shawn join our coaching staff,” Riptide Head Coach John Tucker said in a statement. “He is a great competitor who brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to our sidelines and our defense.”
Trell is currently senior vice president and general counsel for AEG Live, a division of Anschutz Entertainment Group, Inc. Prior to its inaugural season, he played a key role in AEG’s decision to establish an MLL team in Los Angeles and led the charge on many of its early initiatives. During the 2006 season, Trell was a valuable, behind-the-scenes contributor to the Riptide’s 6-6 season and fifth place finish in the League.
An economics major and exceptional student-athlete, Trell excelled as the goalie on three national championship teams, while earning Academic All-American honors from the College Sports Information Directors of America and the U.S. Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association.
As only a sophomore, he proved that big players win big games, earning the Most Valuable Player award in the Division III National Championship game, making 17 stops in the Statesmen’s 9-5 victory over Ohio Wesleyan University. He also was named an honorable mention All-American that year.
His final two seasons proved to be even more successful, earning first-team All-American accolades and the C. Markland Kelly Memorial Award as the Most Outstanding Goalie in the nation, while leading the Statesmen to two more national championships.
For his career, Trell is fourth on the career list in goals against average (8.72) and fifth in career saves (466), while his 8.45 goals against average and 190 saves in 1989 place him third and fourth, respectively, on those single season lists.
The MLL season begins in May.
