In last week’s State of the Colleges’ address, an exuberant President Mark D. Gearan announced that Hobart and William Smith have reached the $100 million mark in Campaign for the Colleges.
“This is an extraordinary accomplishment, Gearan said. “Meeting this milestone so early in the course of the campaign signals that we will reach our objective – to enrich the academic community through enhancements to scholarship, research and facilities.
The Campaign, which has already begun to transform campus through the creation of new facilities and an enhanced endowment, seeks to raise $160 million. “The most ambitious fundraising effort in our history is vigorously underway, Gearan said.
In total, more than 16,000 alumni, alumnae, friends, parents, faculty, staff, corporations and foundations have already made Hobart and William Smith a philanthropic priority.
“It is because of this remarkable dedication to the Colleges that we are able to cultivate an atmosphere of exploration, creativity and ingenuity, said Colleges’ Provost and Dean of Faculty Teresa Amott.
In a call from his office in New York City, David Deming ’75, chair of the HWS Board of Trustees, credited the support of the entire campus community with realizing this landmark level of giving. “Because this is an exceptional institution with remarkable teachers, scholars and students, we’ve been able to make a clear case to donors that Hobart and William Smith is a place ready to move to a new level of excellence.
Momentum from the announcement is already sweeping across campus. “Thanks, in part, to the campaign’s early achievements, like the renovated Admissions Center, our applicant pool is soaring, said Shavonne Ward ’09, an admissions tour guide. “By offering more scholarship assistance and new facilities like the Performing Arts Center and an expanded Scandling Student Center, even more prospective students will be attracted to the Colleges. This is a great time to be at Hobart and William Smith.
