Junior Kate Bardsley wins second place varsity speaker
Sixteen students from the HWS Debate Team got a chance to show off their rhetorical skills at Skidmore College’s debate tournament this past weekend. HWS took on top teams from Yale, Cornell, Union, Wesleyan, Boston University, Dartmouth and others. Despite the stiff competition, William Smith junior Kate Bardsley won second place varsity speaker at the event while the HWS novice debate teams placed in three of the top five novice spots.
Bardsley, the Development Officer for the HWS team, fielded tough topics like affirmative action and nuclear weapons to claim her prize. “I think it’s great seeing our team learn from these experiences, she said. “We’re evolving and becoming more competitive.
Eric Barnes, assistant professor of philosophy, has led the debate team to a series of high-profile wins against some of the nation’s top institutions since its inception in 2004, including dramatic successes at Mount Holyoke College and the 26th World Universities Debating Championships in Dublin, Ireland.
