Gibbon speaks on Japanese education

Sherry Gibbon, HWS director of Asia Teaching Partnerships; and Sherry Schwartz, assistant professor of education at SUNY-Geneseo, recently presented a session titled “Myth and Reality: The Japanese System of Education,” at the New York State Council for the Social Studies annual conference in Rochester.

They were part of a team of 11 professors from around the country selected by the Japan Society in New York City to travel to Japan to study that nation's educational system.

As part of the study tour, the group visited several schools and met with government representatives at the Ministry of Education as well as with administrators, faculty and students at two universities with different programs for teacher preparation.

The workshop presentation offered a glimpse into the nature of an education system with a national curriculum, as opposed to the many different state curricula found in the United States.
