Great Heron Road Race celebrates 10 years

Event continues to make a difference in the fight against breast cancer.

This Saturday, April 14, the 10th annual Great Heron Road Race and 1-Mile Fun Walk invites you to take steps toward defeating breast cancer.

It all began with a scheduling conflict. “For many years we ran an antique sale as a fundraiser, said organizer Sally Scatton, assistant director of William Smith Athletics. “But in 1997 the Barn, our usual location, was booked up with other events – we had to find something else to do. Scatton hit upon the idea of the Road Race as a simple, economical replacement that would get people excited and involved.

Over the past decade, the size of the event has nearly doubled and now averages nearly 400 participants. “We’ve had wonderful support from HWS and the local community, said Scatton. “Many of us have been touched, directly or indirectly, by breast cancer. We’re all trying to make a difference.

Scatton, who has had three relatives diagnosed with the disease, says that the focus of the event has changed over the years. Originally, proceeds benefited national organizations like the American Cancer Society, but Scatton now likes to support groups closer to home, including the Finger Lakes Breast Cancer Support Group, a Geneva organization.

“We’re doing this to give back to the Geneva community, said Scatton. “My vision is to see local groups benefit from our support – to continue to grow and keep our focus on the community around us.

The race, which is sponsored by William Smith Athletics, will begin at 9 a.m. on the 14th, with registration from 7:30 a.m. to 8:30 a.m., at the Hobart and William Smith Sport and Recreation Center. The 5-kilometer course is USATF/RRCA certified.

The entry fee is $15 for pre-registration, $20 after April 9. Free t-shirts will be given to the first 300 registered runners and first 50 registered walkers. For additional information, contact Scatton by e-mail at or by phone at (315) 781-3940.
