An article by Robert F. Gross, HWS Director of Theatre, “The Country Doctor Meets the Play Doctor,” is included in the latest volume of the Contemporary Drama in English series, “Drama and/after Postmodernism.”
Gross's article looks at Franz Kafka's famous short story, “Ein Landarzt,” published in 1919 and translated as “A Country Doctor,” and the stage adaptation by American dramatist Len Jenkin. Gross also considers the implications its transformation.
In the spring, Gross presented an earlier version of the paper at the annual meeting of the German Society for Contemporary Theatre and Drama in English, in Augsburg, Germany.
Gross, a member of the faculty since 1987, holds a bachelor's degree from the University of Wisconsin, a master's from Ohio State University and his doctorate from the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill.
