Interning this summer with the Special Events Coordinator at the Recreation Department in her home city of Palm Beach Gardens, Fla., Francesca Antonucci '10 has become immersed in the exciting world of event planning.
She became interested in the internship because it is an active job that keeps her away from a desk and will give her even more knowledge about the field. It is also an area that Antonucci has experience in. Last spring, she helped plan the Post-Katrina Summit held at HWS.
Perhaps the most surprising thing she has discovered in the internship is the central role that politics plays in planning events for the city. In particular, the decision to cut property taxes has influenced the resources that the department has at its disposal.
“It has a direct effect on the people I work with,” she said. “You start to realize where the money is going… It’s opened my eyes to the other aspect of event planning.”
Working on several different projects, Antonucci says that every day is different. Her first project was to design invitations for a ribbon-cutting ceremony, and she also spends much of her time laying out Web pages, working with sponsors and writing letters, flyers and press releases for upcoming events, including the Family Fitness Day to be held in September. Currently, she is working on a sponsorship packet for a youth triathlon in October, which she says will be useful preparation for when, as co-chair, she organizes the Relay for Life event in Geneva next year.
“It’s been interesting and I’m learning a lot.”
