One of the largest fund-raisers in Geneva, The American Cancer Society's annual Relay for Life, began on Friday night, June 15 on the track surrounding Boswell Field on the HWS campus.
President Mark D. Gearan welcomed participants during the opening ceremonies, which were followed by the survivors' lap around the track. During the 12-hour event, a variety of team events were held, with the goal of keeping one member of each team on the track at all times. Nearly two dozen teams of cancer survivors, their families and friends took part, and more than $67,000 was raised.
One highlight of the evening was the luminaria ceremony, when donated lights — in honor and in memory of those affected by cancer — were arranged around the track.
Details on the event are available at Geneva Relay for Life.
