Bear Sighting

The Geneva Police Department reported that the bear cub spotted on campus earlier on Monday, July 9, is no longer on the Colleges’ campus. It was a North American Black Bear cub weighing about 125 pounds and was spotted in the woods behind the pole barn on St. Clair (behind the first-year parking lot).

GPD and the Department of Environmental Conservation will continue to track the bear cub and will follow up on reports of a possible adult bear. At this point, they believe it is unlikely that anyone will encounter a bear on campus.

Everyone is asked to continue to use caution and report any bear sightings to security at ext.3000.

The photo shown here was taken by HWS photographer Kevin Colton who accompanied DEC officials to view the black bear when it was spotted behind the pole barn. News Channel 13-WHAM interviewed Colton about his close encounter with the animal. The article and accompanying video are available for viewing online. News Channel 10-WHEC ran coverage on Wednesday night and Rochester's Channel 3-WSTM on Thursday.
