President Mark D. Gearan has announced the appointment of Bob O'Connor as the Colleges' Vice President for Institutional Advancement. O'Connor will now direct the advancement operation and oversee a staff of approximately 40 professionals who work in the areas of alumni, alumnae and parent relations, development, and advancement services.
“The Colleges are indeed fortunate to have Bob O'Connor take on this new leadership role,” said Gearan. “He holds a strong commitment to the mission of Hobart and William Smith Colleges and continues to offer capable and steady counsel. Bob has served the Colleges for nine years and is an experienced development professional who will bring his many talents to this post. As the director of the Capital Campaign he has been instrumental to our success.”
Chair of the Board of Trustees David H. Deming '75 welcomed O'Connor to his new post. “On behalf of the Board of Trustees and the search committee, we are glad to bring Bob into this new role. He has been a strong force behind the success of strategic plans HWS 2005 and HWS 2010 as well as Campaign for the Colleges, which now exceeds $108 million. I have every confidence in his abilities to advance these Colleges.”
O'Connor began serving at the Colleges in 1998 as a development officer on the advancement team. Since 2000, he has held senior roles including Chief of Staff in the Office of the President and Secretary to the Board of Trustees. Since January, he has served as director of Campaign for the Colleges.
After graduating from Gettysburg College in Gettysburg, Pa., in 1991 with a degree in political science, O'Connor went to Michigan State, where he earned a degree in sports administration. He previously worked at Gettysburg College, Michigan State and E & J Gallo Winery.
